Why I agree with the Sugar Tax

By 30 March , 2016Diet, News, Uncategorized

A tax on sugar represents a start in the journey to reducing it in our diet as a nation.

The tax needs to be accompanied by educating our children as to why sugar is so bad. Excess sugar consumption can cause the following:

Tooth decay

Caused by acid-producing bacteria in your mouth that feast on carbohydrates, be it sugar from sweets or starch from wholesome foods such as bread.

Inflammation

Ingesting sugar disrupts the natural balance between minerals in our bodies. This in turn prevents enzymes working correctly and impacting digestion and leading to inflammation.

Fat Storage

Eating sugar leads to a spike in insulin, the storage hormone. The more often this happens the more fat you will store from the food you eat.

Side Effects

Sugar has a ‘drug like’ effect on the brain. The high experienced directly after consumption is inevitably followed by a corresponding low. These fluctuations can cause mood swings, irritability and anxiety in people of all ages.
